PHP or ASP.net?

My language is ASP. The classic. It’s an old language but still capable of doing things that I wanted to.

Nevertheless, I am thinking of upgrading myself to a more modern programming language.

Should I continue my path to ASP.net or make a turn to the open source community?

Yes… Microsoft products are generally considered to be superior to other products. You can’t deny the flexibility and the ease of use. Have a look at their latest Visual Studio and SQL Server product series. The installation is a beauty with the help of dialog boxes and you can expect to start coding once everything is installed.

Unlike the later, you will need to download several tools and plug-ins for the installation purpose. Configuration needed to be done manually by editing text documents. Sometimes, you’ll need to look for answers on the net when things doesn’t perform as planned. Installation is a pain and that is the price for using open source solutions.

Things needed to be consider for a web programmer before making their choice:

  1. Compare the cost of web hosting for both solutions. Hosting PHP and MySQL is far cheaper than ASP.net. Simply undeniable.
  2. Tools and IDE. Microsoft offers the best tools and IDE among the two. Visual Studio is a stunning product completed with WYSIWYG interface. You get what you pay for. There also provides free express edition of Visual Web Developer and MS SQL Server if you can’t afford to purchase the full version.
  3. Job opportunities. Do some research on job sites in your area. Which is more in demand? Which skills is paid higher? PHP or ASP.net?
  4. Employers and future clients will usually consider two things in their mind. Cost factor and project time frame. Which will cost cheaper and how long will it take to complete an application?
