I want that domain name!

Guides on buying a domain name

  1. Use common words. Make it easy to remember. Choose memorable and attractive names. These kinds of names will simply capture peoples attention.
  2. Do not use unfriendly and hard to pronounce/spell names.
  3. Max it to only two words. One word is even better.
  4. Avoid hyphens (-) if you can. Eg: Instead of typing www.job-street.com, a person can end up visiting www.jobstreet.com because of the missing hyphen. You are losing a lot of traffic here.
  5. Always look for domain name ending on .com because it is the frequent used ending for domain names (even Internet blind people knows what .com is).

These are a few questions I can recall when dealing with non IT savvy people.

“Are you sure…? .org? Not .com?”

“What is .org?”

“I missed out .my. I only typed .com instead of .com.my. No wonder the page looks different…”

You can try domain names wizard site that offers alternative suggestions if the domain name you are looking for was already registered. www.nameboy.com is a good start. If you do find the name that you want and it matches most of points listed above… my advice is - PURCHASE IT STRAIGHT AWAY! (as fast as you can). Because someone might have the same interest and the domain name is no longer available. This can happen in a matter of seconds. Trust me… I’ve experienced this with many domain names.

Some people bought domain names just for the pleasure of doing bussiness. By selling it at a much higher price to those who really want the name.
